DOCTORAL STUDENT
INAUGURAL RECIPIENT, FRANK CARO SCHOLARSHIP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AGING

My research interests include Alzheimer’s and dementia care, health outcomes for incarcerated older adults, and health disparities in older Latino communities.

One of the things that makes up my entire identity is that I come from first-generation immigrant parents. My father fled the threat of being drafted into the civil war in Nicaragua. My mother left Guatemala to financially support her family back home. They came to this country with such limited resources and opportunities, yet they were able to provide my siblings and me with a better life.

I want to make my parents’ sacrifices worthwhile. I want to help underserved older adults. I think I can make an impact through research on how to improve their lives."
